A True Story-Moving Boxes Stacked in the Garage

by Kirstie Berzanski on August 29, 2009

I recently wrote a blog post: Make Unpacking Easier By Labeling Moving Boxes and a Garage Moving Boxes Mess.

I was inspired to write these articles in thinking about a move that I witnessed 2 years a go. A friend (I will call John to keep his privacy)  hired our moving company to move them.  Being a friend, of course I was there to help watch their kids through the whole process.

Our movers showed up at our friend’s home. So far so good. Then one of the movers came to me and told me that NONE of their moving boxes were labeled. A family of 6, with a 5 bedroom house of moving boxes did not have one label on them.

“What room should we put your moving boxes in,” our movers asked John.

John told the movers to “put all of the moving boxes in the garage and he would sort them out later.”

Are you sure, I asked?

It was too late to offer the suggestion to label his moving boxes so the movers would automatically know which room to place them in. The movers couldn’t open up each box and ask which room they should be placed in.

So the movers did the only thing they could do, and placed the boxes in the garage, stacks and stacks of moving boxes per our friend’s request.

If you can imagine an ENORMOUS pile of moving boxes in the garage ready to unpack!

So guess who spent time over at their house for the next MONTH helping moving boxes from their garage to the various rooms. Yup, my husband and I did.

The fact that he didn’t have his moving boxes labeled really defeated the  purpose of hiring a moving company.

I remember that crazy moving scene like it was yesterday, so do yourself a favor and label your packing boxes what room you want them to be placed in.

It will do your friends and family a favor as well!
