There are three different types of blankets you can use. The quited blanket is made of a heavy duty material that professional movers use. The benefit of this blanket is you can keep it for 20 years and use it anytime you have something delivered, at Christmas time, or during construction projects.
There is also a recycled blanket that is very durable and less expensive; but not designed to last for 20 years. Lastly, you can buy disposable paper moving pads to protect what you need to that day, and then throw them out when you are finished.

Why Use Blankets and Pads During Your Move?
Blankets are ideal to use for any number of reasons. You can use them to help prevent scratching of your doors, walls and stairs. Any tight corner where your movers have to transport items, you can put a blanket on that area so if they need to rest the furniture on it, your house will not be ruined.
Another great use is to place them around your leather furniture before it is shrink wrapped. The reason why this is important is plastic right on the leather isn't good for it, so the pads act as a buffer.
Paper pads are a great way to protect your floors from the wear and tear of having your movers come in and out. Even if you tape the paper in the entry way and/or the areas where you have the most traffic, this can help cut down on damage to your home.
Lastly, blankets are commonly used to place around art work when you have local moves. Instead of spending a lot of money and having your art work professionally packed in art boxes, you can place a blanket around each one and rest them securely against each other in the truck. (This isn't recommended for long distance moves though)
Keep Your Blankets After You Move!
Every home should have 3-6 moving blankets at their disposal. These blankets come in handy for so many things. If you are doing construction in your house, you can use them to cover up items that you don't want dust on.
If you are having new furniture delivered, you can make sure that your stairway is protected. (Not all delivery companies bring them)
Laslty, if you are painting a room you can even use them to put on the floors where you are working.
