Moving Box  Delivery was happy to donate moving boxes for the military over the holidays.  Horizon Prep School in Rancho Santa Fe  California was doing a food drive over Thanksgiving to help our troops in Camp Pendelton  enjoy a wonderful Turkey dinner.

The reason why they needed moving boxes, is the first grade class of Horizon Prep School  had a food drive to get all of the wonderful edibles that one would want for a Thanksgiving feast inside of each moving box. In addition, these adorable first graders decorated each moving box and delivered them to the campus of Camp Pendleton.

What a great service project for the kids and we hope our troops at Camp Pendleton enjoyed the gifted moving boxes that were filled with goodies.

Moving Box Delivery is always looking for fun craft ideas of how kids can re-use cardboard moving boxes.

Kids LOVE to play with boxes. That is a fact. Therefore after you move,  one of the ways you can re-use moving boxes is keep them in your garage as an endless supply of “box games” for your kids to play with.

The object of the game:

Place your arms inside of the holes in the box and ”feel” the new object trying to ”guess” what it is.

How to Play the Moving Box Game

• With two armholes cut into the moving box, and decorated to your delight on the outside, one child places an object into the  moving box.
• The other child sits on the other side of the box and has to FEEL what the object is inside of the box and guess what it is.

A fun filled guessing game  that kids could have fun with for hours!

The great news is that three young architects have taken this popular concept to another level.  Seth Grizzle, Jon Gentry and Jonathan Junker created a company called Greypants, which creates very attractive lighting fixtures made completely from cardboard boxes. Yes, the picture below is a sample of their lights and these hand made shades are manufactured entirely from cardboard boxes.

According to an article by Rebecca Teagarden titled, “The Domestic Goddess,” this is an example of a ever growing field called  “scrapcycling.” This is taking things that one could find in a dumpster and making useful products out of them.

Way to go on creating such beauty from moving boxes!

People move a lot! Recycle your moving boxes after you move and we will all benefit.

How many times have you moved in your lifetime? If you include moving around at college, the number is probably even higher.

The average U.S. resident will move a total of 16 times over their lifetime, about once every 5 years! Now that is a lot of moving!

If everyone recycled their moving boxes, then this wouldn’t be an issue. The problem is that everytime a person moves they need moving boxes, and often these moving boxes are thrown away versus recycled.

The average number of moving boxes used is 50. That means on average, each person uses around 800 moving boxes over the course of their life. (Some higher and some lower depending on the size of their home)

If everyone recycled moving boxes after they moved, our landfills would be much cleaner and our planet a lot healthier.  There is nothing wrong with using moving boxes when you are moving. In the past 100 years, people have tried to come up with better solutions and nothing has been as practical or useful in protecting valuables and moving efficiently as cardboard boxes.

If we all re-use and recycle our moving boxes, then we will help our planet healthy as we continue to move from city to city exloring the world.

This weekend I received an e-mail from one of our customers asking me if I had any recommendations about how to recycle boxes  after she used them in her city. 

This was a very good question, as this information is not always readily available in many cities in the U.S.

All of our moving boxes are made from recycled materials and can be recycled again.

I am amazed at how different the policies are for the various cities in the U.S. for recycling moving boxes.  The policies can vary drastically from one area of a city to another.

As a general guideline, if you want to recycle moving boxes after you use them, call your local city, and call your local recycling center.

Your local city will tell you about “curbside moving boxes” recycling programs that are sometimes sponsored by the city and sometimes sponsored by a private recycling company.

Be sure to ask them:

1. Do you have to make a “move in/move out” appointment for the recycling company to pick up your moving boxes.

2. How many moving boxes are permitted to be recycled.

3. Do you need to prepare the moving boxes in any special way. (Some cities you even need to cut them in specific sizes for them to be recycled)

If you live in an apartment, ask your apartment manager the best route to recycle your moving boxes.

Remember, buy recycled moving boxes, and then recycle them again!
